J.D. NICHOLS, FOUNDER & CHAIRMAN
-
In 1965, Nichols formed NTS. The newly formed company created Louisville’s first master planned community, Plainview and Plainview Apartments, which we still own today.
Early Career
-
Nichols’ community contributions have been impactful. He was the primary catalyst behind the billion-dollar expansion of Louisville International Airport and the decision by UPS to make Louisville the center point of UPS’s worldwide air network. He was also crucial in developing the innovative concept of Metropolitan College, a program that pays for college or technical training for students who are working part-time at UPS. To date, more than 22,000 students have benefitted from this program.
Impact
-
Nichols served on the Board of Trustees and the Board of Overseers for the University of Louisville and also as Chairman of the Kentucky Council on School Performance Standards, which developed the academic agenda incorporated into a program which has been recognized nationally for innovation in education reform. The University of Louisville recognized Nichols for his continued support and commitment to education by naming its downtown research and office complex “J.D. Nichols Campus for Innovation and Entrepreneurship.”
Leadership
-
Nichols was recently honored with a statue recognizing his visionary leadership and the lasting impact he has made on the Louisville airport, which allowed it to flourish and evolve into a global leader for cargo operations and a significant economic driver for our region. He is credited for the expansion of UPS and is one of the longest-serving Airport Authority Board members, providing a constant voice of growth and progress during his more than 20 years of service.
